Aged Federal Soldier 1/6th Plate Ambrotype
This very interesting 1/6th plate ruby glass ambrotype view of a quite aged Federal soldier just surfaced in Ohio. Unfortunately his name has been lost to time, but this image has a great look to it.
The photographer was quite skilled in compensating for the mirror effect of the daguerreotype process and as such had our soldier flip is cartridge box and bayonet scabbard to the opposite sides to accomodate. Also worth noting is that the musket (a Model 1816) has had it's bayonet slid on the muzzle upside down and with the blade to the (original) left side so that it would appear correct as well.
This image has some solarization around the edges, but fortunately none is on the subject. The image shows a great deal of definition as typical of ruby types.
Photos of aged soldiers like this are fairly uncommon and this is a really nice example. This is sure to be a great addition to your image collection, and one your buddies will have a hard time matching.
